On March 12, the HMS Office for Culture & Community Engagement welcomed Dr. Joseph B. Martin, the Edward R. and Anne G. Lefler Professor of Neurobiology and former Dean of Harvard Medical School, for an “Opening Doors” conversation moderated by Dr. Frederick H. Lovejoy, Jr. Drawing on more than five decades in academic medicine, Dr. Martin reflected on his remarkable journey from a childhood on a farm in Alberta to leadership roles at Massachusetts General Hospital, UCSF, and Harvard Medical School. He spoke about his pioneering work in neurology and neurodegenerative disease, and how those scientific pursuits intertwined with the evolving landscape of academic medicine and neuroscience.

Throughout the discussion, what emerged most clearly was the consistency of Dr. Martin’s core values: excellence grounded in compassion, empathy, and kindness. Those who joined in person and online left with a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper understanding of what it means to lead and serve in challenging times. The full conversation is available to view in the video below.
