**What inspires or motivates you in your role at HMS/HSDM?**
I was not an HMS graduate and, perhaps as a result of that fact, I stood in awe of the medical school, it's remarkable faculty, and it's halcyon national academic leadership. This fact has motivated me and inspired me. Over time I have come to deeply appreciate the school's many accomplishments. The Children's Hospital giants, Gamble, Enders, Diamond and Farber as well as HMS giants, Holmes, Cushing, Edsall, Murray and Federman, stood as glowing examples of the faculty to be admired, respected and emulated. These individuals were beyond the reach of a young faculty member but they galvanize my desire to connect our hospital's faculty closely with the medical school. This became a compelling goal for me as attempted to develop educational endeavors and to enhance the academic promotion. To this day, it is with great pride that I happily say that l am a professor on the faculty of the Harvard Medical School.

**In what ways do you feel you contribute to the Harvard community?**
I have found it an immense privilege and a matter of great pride to be able to contribute to the HMS community over my many years of association with the medical school. Those efforts began following my chief residency years at Boston Children's Hospital with the invitation to direct the Introduction to Clinical Medicine Course at the Children's Hospital and shortly thereafter the Core Clerkship in Pediatrics as well as the Advanced Clerkship in Pediatrics. This occurred from 1974 to 1986. My attention then turned to resident education as program director but with a continued focus on medical school students, initiating the first Resident as Teacher Curriculum under Dan Federman's inspired leadership as well as a robust faculty development effort focused on adult learning theory and New Pathway concepts with Elizabeth Armstrong and C Roland Christiansen, all with an eye to improving teaching by our residents, fellows and faculty. Finally, more recently my attention has turned to faculty promotion, first when I was asked by Dean Daniel Tosteson to chair the newly established Teacher Clinician Committee for Academic Promotion in the mid-1990s and then by Dean Joseph Martin in the late 1990s to chair the Longer Service Committee for long serving faculty who have excelled in care, teaching and service to our community. It is been a joyous journey for which I will always be deeply grateful.
