Commonwealth Fund Fellowship in Health Policy Leadership Celebrates 30 Years of Impact
This year, the Commonwealth Fund Fellowship in Health Policy Leadership marks a special milestone: 30 years of preparing physician and dentist leaders to effect change in U.S. health care.
Launched in 1996, the Fellowship began with the simple but ambitious idea – that clinicians, equipped with leadership skills and policy training and a commitment to equity, could transform health systems for the better. Three decades later, that vision has grown into a national alumni network that supports evidence‑based policy, leadership development, and sustained cross‑sector impact. Alumni now span 30 states and represent 33 medical and dental specialties, ranging from internal medicine, pediatrics, and OB/GYN to oncology, psychiatry, surgery, orthodontics, and more.
To mark the 30th anniversary, alumni flew in from across the country for a festive dinner and celebration. The event included storytelling about the early days of the Fellowship, as well as a fireside chat with health leaders who have been critical to the history and the success of the Fellowship. Many of the alumni were then able to attend the 3-day conference that followed: the Leadership and Faculty Development Program Conference and Health Policy Annual Meeting, as well as a career development training led by Julia Minson, professor of public policy at Harvard Kennedy School and author of How to Disagree Better.
The week-long celebration also featured messages from Harvard leaders and HMS faculty, U.S. Representative Ayanna Pressley, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey, and Lieutenant Governor Kimberly Driscoll, underscoring the Fellowship’s role in training leaders who bridge clinical practice and public policy.
As the Fellowship enters its fourth decade, its continued focus remains on developing physicians and dentists who can lead across complex and evolving health systems. With a growing national network and a legacy of policy influence, the Fellowship continues to strengthen its role in shaping the future of health care leadership in the United States. We look forward to seeing what the next 30 years will bring.
