Excellence in Mentoring Awards
The Excellence in Mentoring Awards were established to recognize the value of quality mentoring relationships and their impact on professional development and career advancement in basic/clinical medicine, research, teaching, and administration. Excellence in mentoring is recognized with the following Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Dental Medicine awards:

The Lifetime Excellence in Mentoring Award was established in 1997 and, in 2001, was renamed the William Silen Lifetime Achievement in Mentoring Award. This distinction was made to honor and acknowledge the lifetime commitment Dr. Silen made to mentoring students, residents, and faculty.
William Silen, MD was the Johnson and Johnson Professor of Surgery, Emeritus, and the first Dean for Faculty Development and Diversity at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Silen was a graduate of the University of California School of Medicine at San Francisco (’49). In 1966, he joined the faculty of Harvard Medical School as a professor of surgery and the Chair of the Department of Surgery at Beth Israel Hospital. Dr. Silen was known for his dedication to the training and careers of scores of trainees and faculty, particularly surgeons. Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Silen helped to shape the future of academic medicine by fostering multiple generations of talented trainees and faculty through mentorship to enable them to attain their full potential. Many of these individuals now hold senior leadership positions at academic health institutions throughout the United States and abroad, and are themselves carrying on the mentoring that they learned from Dr. Silen. Through his own work as a clinician, mentor, educator, researcher, and academician, Dr. Silen was an exemplar of excellence. He recognized the importance of mentoring in maximizing one’s potential in academic medicine, which at times included his role as a didactic instructor, a nurturer, a seeker of talent, an upholder of impeccable standards, a tough taskmaster when necessary, a compassionate listener, a dedicated and patient teacher, and a friend.
The first Excellence in Mentoring Award was established in 1995 and, in 1997, was renamed to honor the memory of Dr. A. Clifford Barger, who, among other things, devoted his career to bringing out the best in those who studied, trained, and worked at Harvard Medical School.
A. Clifford Barger, MD (1917-1996) was the Robert Henry Pfeiffer Professor of Physiology, Emeritus, and Chair of the Department of Physiology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Barger was a graduate of Harvard Medical School (’43). He began his career at Harvard Medical School in 1946 as a research fellow in physiology and two years later joined the faculty of the Department of Cell Biology in 1948. Dr. Barger devoted his career to bringing out the best in those who studied, trained, and worked at Harvard Medical School. As President of the American Physiological Society, he led the development of professional opportunities, particularly for women and minority physiologists. He believed that mentoring brought out the best in those who were mentored as well as those who were mentors. Dr. Barger's protégés can be found at almost every medical school in the United States and throughout the world, where many of them continue to emulate the superb mentoring they received by providing excellent mentoring to the next generation.
The Young Mentor Award was established in 2005 to recognize faculty who are still in the early stages of their career, but are devoting their time to providing mentoring for others.
