David Lopes Cardozo
What inspires or motivates you in your role at HMS/HSDM?
I'm motivated by the delight in working with talented and committed staff, students (graduate, dental and medical) and faculty. More than anything, I believe in HMS's fundamental commitment to make the world a better place through biomedical research and by caring for patients and people in need.
In what ways do you feel you contribute to the Harvard community?
I am guilty of getting much more out of this community than I contribute. I have taught the human nervous system for approximately 15 years and have spent some time mentoring graduate and medical school students.
What are you most proud of about your work at HMS/HSDM?
I am most proud of being a small part of a truly good cause. I'm especially proud of the people that I work with at the Division of Medical Sciences. The staff are incredibly devoted and professional. The students are inspirational in terms of their intellectual gifts, their energy, their commitment to science and their good heartedness. The faculty are wonderful colleagues and remarkable in terms of their commitment to our students.
Are there activities outside of your job at Harvard that you feel enrich or inform who you are as an individual at Harvard?
I retain the love of the sea that I developed as an officer in the Royal Canadian Navy and as a ship's master in the merchant marine.
