What are you most proud of about your work at HMS?
Gordon Hall serves as a main gateway to the campus, so I see myself as the first line of defense. I'm proud to be there, knowing that people appreciate my presence and value having me around. It's rewarding to know that they want me there and that I'm making a difference.
What is the significance of the object you brought with you to the photo shoot?
I brought a radio because it represents communication which is crucial in my job. It allows us to send messages and stay connected across campus. It's something we always need on us. Communication really is what makes everything work. Without it, things can fall apart. And when you add the safety element into the mix, it's even more critical. Without that radio, it would be a huge challenge. I think the radio is the perfect object to represent me because it highlights the importance of communication in my role.
In what ways do you feel you contribute to the Harvard community?
I've been here since 2008, so I consider myself a bit of a veteran staff member. Over the years, I've gained a lot of experience, and people often come to me for advice and tips. I'm not too old, but I've become a bit of an elder among the guards. It feels good knowing that my colleagues value my input and trust me enough to seek guidance. I also serve as the shop steward for my union, so I'm involved in helping my coworkers with union-related matters as well. In many ways, I've taken on multiple roles within the community, whether it's offering support to my fellow guards or helping people navigate different situations. I really enjoy being in a position where I can contribute and be a resource for others.
When I first started, I was at the NRB front desk, up by the elevators. After about two years, I moved over to Gordon Hall, where I've been ever since. It's been great to be one of the recognizable security face of Gordon Hall. Knowing that people trust me, both as a colleague and as someone they can turn to for advice, makes me feel like I'm making a real impact here. It's definitely been rewarding to be part of this community for so long.
